Why I became a #FLBLe Digital Champion?
I am now working in HE but before this I was eLearning manager at an FE college for a substantial length of time during which I got to work with a fantastic team, on a wide variety of exciting projects and even won a couple of awards (ALT, TES)…
So for me, acting as a Digital Champion is a way to share what I have learned
Also, as an advocate of coaching and mentoring as an effective way of developing staff digital skills, I was interested in how this type of support could translate into an online environment.
Also, also, I completed some research for my MSc into FE teaching staff and their attitudes to TEL and I was interested in whether a MOOC could address some of the barriers that I had found that were preventing wider development despite staff being generally convinced of the importance and pedagogic value of TEL.
What do I do?
1. I act as an ‘online listener’ – I particularly like to mentor in the first few weeks of a course and ‘like’ as many early [posts as possible so that people realise their contribution is ‘heard’ and is valued. I also answer questions and provide further instructions for any participant with technical difficulties or who has become confused.
2. I share any appropriate additional research, tools and case studies I am aware of as well as my own experiences – in terms both of what has worked for me and the challenges I have (or haven’t) overcome.
3. I act as a ‘critical friend’ – prompting people to explore further and challenging negative attitudes – one of my favourite suggestions is to respond to the ‘I need more time’ comments with James Clay (JISC)’s wonderful “Why I don’t own a dog” blog which certainly triggered a lot of my reflection on my own practice.
What do I get out of it?
My time as a BLe Digital Champion has taught me a great deal and support my learning whilst completing my MSc and CMALT. . In terms of CMALT it helped me to evidence:
- An understanding of the constraints and benefits of different technology
- An understanding of your target learners
It has also given me the to chance to learn globally from range of experiences shared from across the world… so through an experience I went in to intending to support teachers at my own college who I wasn’t able to meet face-to-face led me to discussions with a Buddhist monk in Japan!
